Almost all applications have a wealth of secrets behind them, created by the developers themselves. EnvKey offers a safe and secure environment in which developers can share API keys, as well as other sensitive pieces of data. It allows remote collaborations, and it brings many other advantages, like the possibility of working in a development or server environment with a single variable. Instead of relying on a regular cloud folder or on Google Docs, you can share data with your co-workers while maintaining a strict need-to-know policy.

EnvKey is free to try for two weeks, after which you need to pick a payment plan, depending on your team's size. You can download and install the program like any other tool on the market. There are no complex configurations to make, and you don't need to install any special tools or drivers.

Once the program is up and running, you must go through a quick initial setup, which involves creating an online account, as well as an organization in which you will collaborate with other people. Finally, you may create an entry for one of your apps and gain access to the main user interface. Its layout resembles a password manager, but you get more options and possibilities for individual entries. For example, you can create a table with variables for development, staging and production and generate unique keys for local development or testing, staging or production servers.

The software lets you manage the access level each individual gets when working on an app. You may assign each collaborator as an admin or grant them developer or DevOps access, depending on how much they are allowed to know, see and do. Another useful feature is the possibility of managing firewall settings for local development and each server type. You can set the program to inherit the settings from the organization's network, extend it or override it.

If you want to protect your API keys and other sensitive development-related data, you should do it right and let EnvKey protect everything for you.

Pros

The software lets you generate and store API keys, as well as other sensitive info in a secure database. You can assign different access levels to your collaborators. Everything can be organized neatly and efficiently for individual apps, without too much effort.

Cons

There are no obvious design flaws or functionality gaps to address.
